Bomb scam circulating around Sault Ste. Marie businesses

SAULT STE. MARIE — A scam has been circulating throughout the Sault Ste. Marie area, threatening to blow up a building if money was not paid.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Department said several businesses had calls from someone demanding the store pay $5,000 on a Green Dot money card, or the caller would blow up a bomb in the building.

Detectives were able to determine the calls were from California.  When they spoke with the suspect, the suspect claimed the calls were pranks.  Further investigation found that the “Green Dot money scam” has been quite prevalent throughout the country recently.

No money was sent by any of the local businesses.
