U.P. volleyball teams bounced from tourney

MANISTIQUE – The high school volleyball season for two teams from the Upper Peninsula came to an end Tuesday night in the quarterfinals. Calumet fell to Roscommon, 3-0 in a Class C Quarterfinal matchup. In Class D, Stephenson lost 3-0 against Onaway. The Bucks and Cardinals both move on to the semifinals later this week in Battle Creek. The Copper Kings and Eagles were the last remaining U.P. volleyball teams in contention for a state title.

In high school hockey action Tuesday night, Houghton opened up the season with 7-0 win at Negaunee over the Miners. Cale Markham had two goals, one short-handed, with three assists to lead the scoring. Wyatt Liston had a goal in each period for the hat trick and senior goalie Marcus Gloss stopped all 11 shots he faced for the shutout.
