Japanese sister city visitors land at Sawyer

Marquette area residents are rolling out the welcome mat for nine visitors from the Land of the Rising Sun.

Marquette has had a sister city relationship with Higashiomi, Japan since 1979, and nine Higashiomi residents arrived at Sawyer Airport this afternoon on a sister city visit.

They’re here until next Monday morning and are staying with eight Marquette host families.

The Higashiomi delegation includes the city’s mayor, the chairman of the city assembly and the city’s planning division manager.

Michigan also has a sister state relationship with Shiga Prefecture in Japan, the equivalent of a state that Higashiomi is in.
