Special funding to help various road projects throughout the U.P.
Four counties in Upper Peninsula will receive a portion of $115 million in special state funding for road improvements.
Projects in the U.P. that will receive funding:
- $30,000 for U.S. 2 near Moon Lake Road north of Iron Mountain
- $660,000 for County Road 521 between M-35 and U.S. 2 in Delta County
- $850,000 for County Road 519, South Chaney Lake Road, south of Wakefield to the Wisconsin Border
- $675,000 for Broad Street/Main Street Corridor from U.S. 41 to Jentoft Street in L’Anse
- $50,000 to the city of Ironwood for various projects
“Fixing Michigan’s roads is a top priority for the state’s residents and the Legislature and governor have debated different ideas for how to get to a solution,” State Representative Ed McBroom (R-Vulcan) said in a press release. “Tackling a problem decades in the making is a daunting task, but the funding for this round of projects provides a glimmer of hope that we are making progress.”
“I am very glad to see this money coming to our community to fix these roads,” State Representative Scott Dianda (D-Calumet) said in a press release. “This is a good start on the maintenance and repair that our roads need, but there is still much more to do here in House District 110 and across the state.”
“These road projects will provide needed jobs to many U.P. communities, but we still need to go back to work in Lansing,” said Dianda. “These projects are just a beginning. The Legislature needs to be back in session and working on a roads funding package that will take care of the roads in communities across our state.”
The Michigan Department of Transportation approved 130 projects throughout the state using almost $115 million. The Legislature allocated $230 million in existing funds for road improvements; half of the projects were announced in December. The funding is in addition to $258 million the government approved for roads in bridges for the state’s 2015 budget. A total of $870 million has been allocated to help improve roads since 2012.
