U.P. native inks deal with NHL team

Calumet native Ben Johnson signed a three-year, entry level deal with the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday. The story was first reported by HockeyBuzz.com.

The Devils selected Johnson in the 3rd round of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. Last season with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League, Johnson had career highs in both goals (28) and assists (25), racking up 53 points to go along with a plus, minus rating of plus 18.

Johnson could spend another season in Windsor or play with the Albany Devils of the American Hockey League. If things go really well for the 19-year old U.P. native, he could play for New Jersey next season.

Johnson played for Calumet High School during the 2010-11 season, where he tallied 37 goals and 40 assists in 30 games.

The New Jersey Devils have another Upper Peninsula player in their organization as a prospect. Blake Pietila, a member of the Michigan Tech hockey team, was selected by the franchise in the 5th round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
