High School Hockey Season Underway
The High School Hockey season is officially underway and Mother Nature must’ve taken notice with conditions so cold and snowy outside that pond hockey was a serious possibility. But, they decided to play inside where it was definitely mullet season.
The Redmen were fired up for their home opener, but the Gremlins cooled those spirits quickly. Eight minutes in number 8, Reid Pietila, launches one from just inside the blue line, bulging the twine and giving the Gremlins a 1 – 0 lead.
Still in the first, Connor Hannon lets one fly from long range. Redmen netminder Johnny Beckman stops the first but not the second. It’s Peetala again, this time on the doorstep, with a little flip shot over Beckman’s shoulder.
Houghton would out shoot Marquette 4 to 7 in the first, and take a 2 – 0 lead into the first intermission. The Redmen tried to stretch out the kinks and refocus for the second period, but it would end up being more of the same.
There goes that man again, it’s Pietila, keeping his head up, finding a streaking Jed Kallio who stuffs it home with a corner pocket wrister to extend the lead to 3.
Just a few minutes later, deep in Redmen territory, Erich Walter keeps an ear to the ground, dropping a backhand pass to Spencer Donnelly who goes 5-hole for a 4 – 0 lead.
The Gremlins would add 4 more by the end of it, beating the Redmen 8 to 0.
