In game one, a pitchers duel developed between Marquette’s McKinley Larson and Menominee’s Riley Hegg as they each tossed a four hitter. In the end, Menominee came away with a 3-2 victory as Landen Macoux came in for the save for the last six outs. Larson struck out 8 while Hegg struck out 4.
Offensively for the Blues, Riley Lynch, Levi Underwood, Hunter Larson and Trevor Bratonia each recorded a hit, but it wasn’t enough. “We need to do a better job of putting the ball in play when we have runners in scoring position and to cut down on our physical and mental errors on defense. With the late spring, we just haven’t really been able to get a lot of field time in yet and it really shows,” said Blues Manager Derek Swajanen.
In the nightcap, the Blues dropped a hotly contested 7-6 game which featured multiple lead changes throughout. Ryan Walther pitched the complete game and he also led the way offensively going 2-4 at the plate with a triple.
Riley Lynch added two hits as well and several other players contributed for a total of 9 hits. They were Underwood, Hunter Larson, Sam Leow, Derek Stone and Bratonia. The Blues gave up the lead in the top of the 6th, but Larson had a hit, advanced on a past ball and then Leow had a base hit to score Larson to bring the game to within 1.
In the last inning, Ryan Hanson reached on error and then advanced to 2nd on Underwood base hit. However, Luke Swajanen struck out and Hunter Larson popped out to the third to end the game.
“Again, we had runners in scoring position several times during this game and just couldn’t find a way to score them. These are games that we need to start finding ways to win as the season progresses,” said Derek Swajanen.
