The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team will have plenty of options as it
shoots for its sixth straight 20+ win season in 2012-13.
Leading the Huskies will be WBCA Honorable Mention All-American senior
guard Sam Hoyt<http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wbkb/2012-13/bios/hoyt%20sam00.html>.
The Arkansaw, Wis., native has started the last 61 straight games for the
Huskies and can eclipse the 1,000 point scoring mark this season. The
two-time All-GLIAC selection ranked in the top-10 in the league in seven
statistical categories including sixth in scoring (16.0 points per game),
second in 3-pointers made (2.7) and third in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.7).
Joining Hoyt in the back court is senior Emma
Veach<http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wbkb/2012-13/bios/veach%20emma00.html>.
The Grand Haven, Mich., native averaged 8.1 points per game in 16 games
last season. Veach, who earned GLIAC first-team and GLIAC Freshman of the
Year accolades before transfering to Tech, led the team in free throw
percentage (80-percent) and was second in rebounding (5.8 per game).
The team will enjoy plenty of depth in the back court with sophomore Michelle
Gaedke<http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wbkb/2012-13/bios/gaedke%20michelle00.html>(Dearborn,
Mich.), junior Page Albie (Sun Prairie, Wis.) and junior Kelcey
Traynoff<http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wbkb/2012-13/bios/traynoff%20kelcey00.html>(Beach
Park, Ill.) working to earn playing time. Red shirt freshman Kerry
Gardner<http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wbkb/2012-13/bios/gardner%20kerry00.html>(Middleton,
Wis.) and true freshman Mackenzie
Perttu<http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wbkb/2012-13/bios/MackenziePerttu>(Green
Bay, Wis.) will also fight to break in the line-up in their first
year in a black and gold uniform.
The front court could see a mix of players. Sophomore forward Jillian
Ritchie<http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wbkb/2012-13/bios/ritchie%20jillian00.html>earned
the Terry Wilson Award as the school’s top female freshman
student-athlete after starting 14 of the 27 games she appeared in. The De
Pere, Wis., native averaged 2.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists per
game.
Junior Taylor Stippel<http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wbkb/2012-13/bios/stippel%20taylor00.html>(Woodbury,
Minn.) will be an option for the Huskies after logging
substantial minutes at the end of last season. In her valuable time,
Stippel set personal records including a career high 18 points against Lake
Erie and shooting 51-percent in the final 6 games.
Juniors Kate Glodowski<http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wbkb/2012-13/bios/glodowski%20kate00.html>(Amherst,
Wis.) and Heather
Kessler<http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wbkb/2012-13/bios/kessler%20heather00.html>(Antigo,
Wis.) will each be a threat after appearing in a combined 49
games. Emily Harrison<http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wbkb/2012-13/bios/harrison%20emily00.html>,
a 6’4 sophomore, will add a dominant target on the block.
Red shirt freshman Danielle
Blake<http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wbkb/2012-13/bios/blake%20danielle00.html>(Midland,
Mich.) and true freshman Kylie
Moxley <http://michigantechhuskies.com/sports/wbkb/2012-13/bios/KylieMoxley>(Brillion,
Wis.) will bring a height and power element to the team as they
battle for time this season.
The team welcomes back alum Maria Kasza who begins her first season as
assistant coach. Kasza was a three-year member of the team and returns to
the sidelines after coaching high school basketball the last two years.
Tech faces Green Bay in an exhibition game on Nov. 3rd before opening the
regular season at home against Concordia-St. Paul. The team will play four
non-conference and 22 conference games.
