NMU Volleyball sweeps Finlandia

MARQUETTE, Mich.- The Northern Michigan University volleyball team swept the Finlandia Lions in a non-conference matchup from Vandament Arena on Tuesday (Oct. 9) evening. With the win, coach Dominic Yoder’s squad improves to 13-6 overall. The Wildcats won 25-7, 25-4 and 25-9.
“The establishment for this match was for our non-starters to get the opportunity to play in a competitive environment,” Yoder said. “It’s also a release for them, as we have had some stressful matches over the last few weeks.”
Freshman Alexis Nelson led NMU with a match-high 16 kills. Junior Kalli Herron had seven kills while junior Sarah Hamilton added five. Junior Kellisha Harley setup the offense with 33 assists and added three service aces. Junior Lina Lopes led the ‘Cats in aces with four. Senior Kalin Zimmerman led with 11 digs, and three aces. NMU finished with 42 kills on the night compared to Finlandia’s six.
For the Lions (1-13), Emma Cole led the team with three kills. Kristen Rose had six digs while Cole and Lauren Jarvinen added five.
NMU will now hit the road to Aurora, Ill. over the weekend to play in the Great Lakes Valley Conference/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover. Northern’s first match will take place on Friday (Oct. 12) at 12:30 p.m. against Southern Indiana.
