MDOT project set to begin Monday

HANCOCK — Starting Monday morning, drivers in the Copper Country will have a construction project to keep in mind.

The Michigan Department of Transportation will be reconstructing about a mile of US-41 in Hancock from the Portage Lake Lift Bridge to Lincoln Drive.

In addition to fixing the road, MDOT will be making drainage improvements, adding curb bump-outs and landscape plantings. Just like with any construction project, there will be a detour for drivers to deal with.

“We’re going to be detouring traffic onto Hancock Street, which is currently a one-way street that will be two-ways with traffic with traffic in each direction for the rest of the summer,” said MDOT Communications Rep. Dan Weingarten.

“We are going to keep portions of Quincy Street open as we do the reconstruction. Parts that are not being actively reconstructed will be open to local traffic so that people can get to businesses,” Weingarten added.

While this work is going on, officials with the City of Hancock will be performing water main and sewer improvements. The $7.1 million project is expected to be completed in July of 2017.
