If you are looking to make an impact in a child’s life, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Marquette and Alger Counties may have a program that’s right for you.

The organization kicked off its Man UP campaign, aiming to match 30 boys with a Big Brother.

At its first recruitment event Tuesday night at the Ore Dock Brewing Company in Marquette, at least ten men signed up.

Being a Big Brother can lead for forming lasting relationships, and make an impact in the community.

“I was very fortunate to be matched with a Little that I have so much in common with, and it just happened to be like that, and we get to spend so much time outside,” BBBS of Marquette and Alger Counties Board Vice President Jake Colantonio said, who has been part of the program for three and half years.  “I get to teach him a lot of things that I’ve learned along the way, and also I get to learn a lot from him as well.”

Anyone can apply to be a Big Brother, and the time commitment is about four to six hours a month.

“Signing up is easier than people thing,” Colantonio said.  “I know it seems like a rigorous process of getting to be a Big Brother, but it’s such an easy thing.  The girls at the office make it really easy on everybody, and it’s a very rewarding program to be a part of, and it’s a great way to give back to the community.”

“Anybody can apply because there’s a wide range of Littles that they can be matched with, all different activities and interests.”

There is another Man UP event Thursday, February 20 at the Jasper Ridge Brewing Company in Ishpeming from 6-8 p.m., or you can visit the Big Brothers Big Sisters website for more information.
