How will weather be on ‘Opening Day’?

MARQUETTE — With firearm season opening on Sunday, it’s the most wonderful time of the year for a large majority of the Upper Peninsula.

This year’s weather for opening day will be much different than last season. While last year many spots throughout the UP had at least two or three feet of snow, this season the ground will likely be bare.

We’ll likely see 2 to seven inches of slushy snow Thursday night, but it won’t last long.

“It looks like as we head through the weekend temperatures are going to return to the mild streak we’ve been seeing recently,” said NWS Meteorologist Matt Zika, “so all of the snow that falls tonight will be melted by Sunday morning with the exception of maybe the far western U.P. where there may be a little bit left. The first morning and day of deer season is going to be very mild from what most people typically expect for this time of year.”

Temperatures are expected to be in the 40’s and 50’s on Saturday and Sunday.

The mild pattern is likely to continue throughout the entire first week of deer season so if you do get your buck, be sure to locate it as soon as possible.
