Comfort foods that help fight depression

ISHPEMING —  We have all herd the term “comfort food,” but did you know that the saying actually has some truth behind it?

According to a recent Web–MD article, certain comfort foods can actually act as an anti–depressant. Number one on their list, is a Thanksgiving favorite – turkey.

The article says that this bird has the protein building–block tryptophan, which your body uses to make serotonin. Researchers say serotonin is the chemical that plays a key role in depression.

Others on the list include Brazil Nuts, carrots, clams and mussels, coffee, leafy greens and salmon. The article warns against turning to alcohol because even though it may help in the moment, researchers say that it will make depression symptoms worse over time.
