Professor at Bay College Receives National Recognition

John Mathews, professor of History and Philosophy at Bay College has been selected as a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Summer Scholar from a highly competitive national applicant pool to attend one of 21 summer study opportunities supported by the NEH. The Endowment is a federal agency that each summer supports seminars and institutes at colleges, universities, and cultural institutions, so that faculty can work in collaboration and study with experts in humanities disciplines.

John will participate in an institute entitled “The Historical and Cultural Development of Modern India”. The four-week program will be held in Delhi, Agra, and Varanasi, India and directed by Beverly Blois of Northern Virginia Community College and Daniel Ehnbom of the University of Virginia. Sponsorship of the institute is by the Community College Humanities Association, headquartered at Essex County College in Newark, New Jersey.

John is looking forward to traveling abroad for this privileged learning experience. “Being selected by the National Endowment for the Humanities is a great career and professional development opportunity. Travel abroad and field studies are important components to teaching History. I will be able to bring another part of the world back into the classroom with me next fall.” John will resume teaching his history and philosophy classes and courses in Bay’s Honors Program in the Fall 2011 semester.
