Meals on Wheels Delivering Much Needed Meals During the Pandemic
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Meals on Wheels Program bring fresh, hot meals to seniors. In addition to the meals, delivery drivers provide another important service, checking in on their patrons and providing a human connection.
The seniors the program helps are home-bound, unable to prepare meals for themselves, and are quarantining due to the pandemic.
Community Nutrition Services Director, Lori Stephens-Brown says, “Our drivers really care about their seniors, and the seniors feel that and a lot of times they are seeing their driver more than anyone else in their life. If they are getting deliveries five days a week, they become an important person in their life. They are very caring, important people we have on our staff.”
The drivers all understand the impact they have, and the joy from making a difference.
Driver Larry Marta says, “It’s just rewarding. You are doing something good for someone. You can go into people’s home where they are comfortable, and you’re comfortable. You can sit around and shoot the breeze.”
