‘Disable the Label’ – Living with a disability
MARQUETTE — What’s it like to live with a disability? A group in Marquette answered that question Friday at the Peter White Public Library.
The Superior Alliance for Independent Living hosted ‘Disable the Label’, giving members of the community the chance to see what it’s like to live with a disability. Different booths gave people a chance to experience what it’s like to be hearing impaired, visually impaired, and what it’s like to get around in a wheelchair.
“Some of our challenges are being accepted here. People don’t think that we are capable of doing things and we are just as capable as anyone. For me, it’s about being able to hear everything around me because if I can’t hear I’m not going to know if there’s traffic or if people are talking to me. Some have to deal with being blind,” said Morgana Penglase, an event volunteer.
“My right eye stopped growing when I was still in uterus. My left one worked until I was about six I would say. Since I don’t have anything to compare it to, for me, it’s just how it is,” said guest speaker Bryn Jungwirth.
About 650 million people live with a disability according to disabled-world.com.
