Tech’s Garrett Mead wins GLIAC award
BAY CITY, Mich. — Michigan Tech kicker Garrett Mead (Alpena, Mich.) has earned GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week honors for the second time this season after going seven-for-seven on place kicks in a 59-14 win over Lake Erie last Saturday (Nov. 15).
Mead made all five extra point attempts and hit field goals from distances of 33 and 31 yards to help the Huskies to nine wins for just the fourth time in school history. He also had 467 yards on eight kickoffs (a 58-yard average).
The senior is 9-of-11 on field goals and 33-of-35 on extra points this season. His 29 career field goals and 224 kick scoring points are the most in school history.
Mead was the GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week in the season opener after booting a game-winning field goal as time expired in an 18-17 triumph at Wayne State. Three weeks later, he had the game winner on the final play of a 34-31 win at Northern Michigan.
Michigan Tech finished the regular season at 9-1 will begin postseason play next Saturday (Nov. 22) by hosting Angelo State (Texas) at Sherman Field at 12 noon.
