DNR Reminder on Deer Check Stations

With the start of firearm deer season now less than 36 hours away, the DNR wants to remind hunters of something it said in October.

It’ll have fewer deer check stations operational around Michigan this season — a lot fewer.

There are 125 of them statewide.

Barely a third of them will be open this year — 45 in all.

But our area won’t be affected as much as that.

The U.P. has 19 deer check stations, and 10 of them will still be open.

The Marquette, Baraga and Newberry check stations will be open Monday through Friday.

They’ll also be there Sunday for opening day, as well as for the first full weekend of the season next week.

The other 7 stations will only be open on specific dates and times, so it’d be a good idea to contact them.

Some of those are at DNR Field Offices in Escanaba, Crystal Falls, Shingleton and Sault Ste. Marie.

The others are at the Rusty Rail in Cornell, the Root Cellar in Marenisco and the Mackinac Bridge Highway Station in St. Ignace.

For muzzleloader season and the other seasons, the only open stations will be the ones in Marquette, Baraga and Newberry.
