MI Libraries At Risk of Deep Cuts

College financial aid and human services aren’t the only areas sweating out the possibility of deep cuts in state funding.

The public library system is at risk, too.

Earlier today, the Michigan House voted to cut state aid to libraries by 40%.

Under their bill, library funding would be cut from $10 million to $6 million.

The state Senate still has to vote on the proposal.

The Michigan E-Library, or MEL, is also in jeopardy.

It’s a network where libraries statewide can share resources on the Internet.

But if any cuts are made to the MEL system, they wouldn’t take effect until at least 2011.
