Governor Calls for Disaster Aid for U.P. Counties
Even by Michigan standards, last winter proved to be a severe one.
It resulted in huge amounts of crop damage for farmers statewide.
Now, Governor Jennifer Granholm is trying to get them some help.
She’s asking for federal disaster aid for 27 Michigan counties.
6 of them are in the U.P.
There’s Mackinac, Chippewa and Luce Counties to the east, and Dickinson, Iron and Menominee Counties to the south.
Between last November and July 24th, all of them had damage to at least 30% of their crops.
The damage estimates are still being worked on right now.
But there’s no way of knowing if the state qualifies for help until the harvest.
