Cleaning Up Cigarette Butts

U.P. environmentalists and the City of Marquette are creating a partnership to keep cigarette butts out of Lake Superior.

The Superior Watershed Partnership, city police and the county health department are working together to keep the Lake Superior shoreline free of cigarette butts.

The butts can easily move from the city’s streets to the water’s edge.

Carl Lindquist of the Watershed Partnership says police will be ticketing drivers they catch disposing cigarettes onto the street starting in mid-August, when a special week-long campaign starts.

But the effort to keep the lake clean will extend well beyond August.
