USOEC Weightlifting Gets a Reprieve
Less than a week after the USOEC’s weightlifting program is declared dead weight, it gets a temporary reprieve.
USA Weightlifting says it’s found enough money since last week to keep the program open until next summer.
7 athletes train there full-time and attend class at NMU.
Last week’s news of the closure spurred USA Weightlifting members who were angered by the idea into action.
This means the 2009 national college weightlifting championship will still be at NMU in April as planned.
USA Weightlifting has told the USOEC their goal is to keep the program going through at least the 2012 London Olympics.
The move buys time for USA Weightlifting to find a more permanent funding fix.
USOEC head Jeff Kleinschmidt says he thinks they will find one and keep the program past next June.
