DNR: Deer Sightings Should Be Down

The weather looks promising for the start of deer season.

However, the DNR is predicting the animals themselves will be tougher to find this year than last.

Terry McFadden is a wildlife biologist out of the DNR’s Marquette field office.

He says they could be down by as much as 10% across the U.P.

Last winter was the roughest on the deer herd in more than a decade.

McFadden says the long-lasting snow left the deer stressed out and producing fewer fawns than usual.

For that reason, he thinks the deer that hunters do see will be older on average than usual.
