Negaunee kids plant marigolds
More than a hundred Negaunee students got to get down and dirty while learning something this afternoon.
Fifth-graders from Lakeview Elementary School took part in Marigold Mania at Miners Park.
It’s the fourth year that the school, the Negaunee Beautification Committee and the Negaunee Historical Society have teamed up to plant flowers in the park.
” They get to plant the marigolds that they have started in the greenhouse, over here at the park for the whole community to enjoy,” Anna Mattson of the Beautification Commitee said. “And one of our goals is to involve as much of the community in our spirit of maintaining and creating an atmosphere in our parks that promotes our community, and in this park there’s a community monument to children who have passed away in caving grounds. So, we wanted the children to learn about safety during the summer.”
The students did that by listenining to Roland Koski of the Historical Society.
He told them about four Negaunee boys who died after trespassing in the caving grounds in the city’s Old Towne area in the 1940s and ’50s.
Koski also urged them to stay out of the caving grounds themselves.
