Drummond Island woman rescued

It was a long weekend for one family and for law enforcement in the eastern U.P. after a woman went missing.  The Drummond Island woman has been reunited with her family.

On Sunday at approximately 1:30 p.m., Michigan State Police Troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie Post were called to Drummond Island for a report of a missing 64 year old woman. Initial information was that her husband had left the home on Friday to travel to Sault Ste. Marie.  He was unable to return home on Saturday due to weather conditions.  He made several phone calls overnight to contact his wife; however, he was not able to make contact with her.

On Sunday, he arrived home to find that his wife was missing from the home.  The woman’s vehicle was still parked at the residence – covered with the recent snowfall.  Her purse, cell phone and medications were in the residence.  She was known to take walks with the dog along the Lake Huron Shore and surrounding trails.

The police set up an Incident Command at the scene. MSP Trooper I (helicopter) was contacted and began proceeding to the scene.  An extensive ground search was conducted utilizing two K9 units, Chippewa County Search & Rescue,  Drummond Island Fire Department Volunteers and Conservation Officer Kyle Publiski.

The woman was located by C/O Publiski and K9 units – alive, approximately two miles from her home in a vacant cabin.

She told police that on Saturday afternoon she had left her home to go out looking for her dog.  The weather turned and she became lost and disoriented in the densely wooded area. She came upon a vacant cabin, broke out a window, entered the building and found some extra clothing in an attempt to stay warm.

Police transported her from the cabin on ATV  to  a waiting Drummond Island EMS were she was treated for hypothermia.

She was brought home and reunited with her husband of 42 years.
