Mining severance tax vote planned for Wednesday

The Marquette County Board of Commissioners had an update on the mining severance tax at their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday night.

Lawmakers were to vote on the tax Tuesday, but the “Right to Work” legislation moved the vote to Wednesday.  The tax will be voted on in the House of Representatives and the Senate, and if passed, it will move to Governor Rick Snyder for a final signature.  The county commission is hoping the tax will be passed in one day.

The county commissioners called making changes to the mining severance tax a team effort that will benefit the county, state, and mining operations in the Upper Peninsula for years to come.

The Ishpeming Hematites football team was also honored at the meeting.  The team was awarded a plaque from the county commissioners congratulating them on representing Marquette County and the Upper Peninsula.  A representative from Senator Tom Casperson gave a shot speech, and said that the team will be receiving recognition from Governor Snyder.
