Proposed New Marquette City Charter Discussed

The Marquette City Charter Commission held a special meeting tonight to continue reviewing the proposed new city charter.

It would replace the city’s current charter which was first authored in 1951. In a memo to the city charter commission, City Manager Bill Vajda highlighted 25 different points in the charter that conflict with state statutes or are worded in a confusing manner. The commission members have been working very closely with Vajda and other city of Marquette employees on finalizing a draft.

After the proposed charter is approved, the city will submit it to the State Attorney General’s Office. Then if it is approved by the state, the city will look to place the document on the November ballot for citizen approval.
