Dementia Sensitivity Training

Understanding dementia and the effect it has on victims was the focus of an exercise in Marquette today.

Brookridge Heights Assisted Living & Memory Care held a sensitivity training session.

Julie Laethem of Brookridge Heights says the session involves spending six minutes with the physical issues associated with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Participants were told they were going into a dark room and had to complete five simple tasks in a matter of minutes.

The only catch — during the training, participants had to wear special gloves, goggles and shoe insoles, and they also had to listen to loud, obscure noises.

All of this helped people understand the sensation that many dementia and Alzheimer’s patients deal with.

The exercise also is very humbling, as healthy people were able to get a better understanding of the toll these diseases take on patients.
