Comley recognized with 2020 Hobey Baker Legend of College Hockey Award
MARQUETTE — Former Northern Michigan hockey head coach Rick Comley was named the recipient of the 2020 Hobey Baker Legend of College Hockey Award, as announced by the Hobey Baker Memorial Award Committe on Monday, March 9th. Coach Comley served at the helm of Northern Michigan’s hockey program from its inception in 1975 until the end of the 2001-2002 season. Over his 26-year tenure with the Wildcats, Comley corraled 538 wins. He also led the Wildcats to winning seasons in 18 of his 26 years.
Comley was the Wildcats’ head coach during the team’s NCAA title run in 1991. That run resulted in a national championship after an 8-7 triple overtime victory over Boston University.
The NMU hockey program will recognize Coach Comley, as well as the entirety of the 1991 national championship winning team, during their 2020-21 campaign. As of right now, the plans are to hold the ceremony on October 17th & 18th. Ironically, Northern Michigan will be playing at home against Boston University those days.
