Day 2 of Hockeyville Week in Calumet

CALUMET — It is now Day 2 of Hockeyville Week in Calumet, and the excitement continues to grow within the community as more events are taking place today.

The big game between the Detroit Red Wings and the St. Louis Blues might not be for another two days, but that didn’t stop some people from hitting the ice.

Events held in the Colosseum this afternoon involved the getting youth skaters out on the ice to work on hockey skills with some professionals. A public skating session was also held in the Colossuem, all before preparations began for another game being held there tonight.

“Involve everyone in the community,” said former Detroit Red Wing forward Drew Miller. “So we get the kids out there and get them skating around and doing some drills. It’s all about having some fun and getting them involved with the new rink additions and make them apart of this whole experience.”

Miller, along with former Detroit Red Wing Kirk Maltby, will be honorary coaches in the game tonight between the Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines.

“Yeah, me and Maltby are going to be honorary coaches, so we’re going to help out each team,” Miller said. “I think I’m with the Pioneers and Maltby’s with the Wolverines. We’re just going to be out there trying to hang out, and I hear it’s a pretty fierce rivalry, so we’re going to try to jump in and be a part of it.”
