K.I. SAWYER — The weather was pretty nice Friday morning, and that’s good because there were a lot of people out on the link for a good cause. 36 teams teed off at the 24th Annual D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans Golf Outing at Red Fox Run golf course in K.I. Sawyer.

All of the open spots to play in the outing filled up really quickly this year, with all of the money raised will go directly to supporting the veterans at the home.

“Today is a blessing,” said Ryan Engle, the commandant at the Home for Veterans. “All of the money that we raised today will go directly back to support the work that we do with our members. It doesn’t go to paying electric bills or salaries, it goes back into things like dentures and other medical costs for the veterans we serve, so it’s a pretty exciting day.”

The outing had a lot of sponsors that helped out this year, and they appreciated all of the support they have gotten. Major sponsors for the event were the American Legion-Department of Michigan, Marquette County Steelworkers Coalitions, and the VFW State Department-15th District. Minor sponsors were Argonics, Inc., Chassell VFW Post 6507, Cleveland-Cliffs Natural Resources, DAV Cloverland Chapter 23, Marquette County DAV Auxiliary 22, Michigan Department of the VFW Auxiliary, Northern Michigan University, Range Bank, Upper Peninsula Health Plan, VFW Superior Memorial Post 6, and the West End Health Foundation.

Hole sponsors included 44 North, American Legaion Auxiliary Units 349 and 44, American Legion Auxiliary-Department of Michigan, American Legion Richard Jopling Post 44, Bergman for Congress, DAV 22 VAVS, DAV Department of Michigan, IBEW Local Union 906, Iron Range Agency, Joe’s Automotive Repair, Marquette County Veterans Alliance, Midway Rentals, Military Order of the Purple Heart Auxiliary Unit #1985, National Weather Service-Employees Contribution, Oberstar Excavating, Ojibwa Casino, Superior Extrusion, Inc., The Window Store, Tru North Federal Credit Union, United Steelworkers Of America Local 4950, U.P. Home, Health, Hospice and Private Duty, Up North Lodge, Vast, VFW V.A. Romo Post 3165, VA Auxiliary Post 3165, VFW-14th District, and the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 380.

“To those in Marquette and throughout the Upper Peninsula that support this event this year, and every year, on behalf of the home and as a veteran myself, I want to thank you,” said Engle. “It’s incredible to see this outpouring of support. And for those who maybe didn’t support, the opportunity to support veterans and various causes doesn’t come knocking on your doorstep but I encourage you and challenge you to go out and find it. And I challenge everybody watching today to go out and do something good for a veteran because they did something for you.”
