Youngstrom earns GLIAC Player of the Week honors
BAY CITY – Senior Darby Youngstrom (Cook, Minn.) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Player of the Week after guiding the Northern Michigan University Women’s Basketball team to victories over Lake Superior State University Thursday and Ferris State University Saturday.
Youngstrom paced the Wildcats with 13 points and eight rebounds per game last week.. In Thursday’s win over LSSU, the senior was one of four Wildcats to reach double figures with 10 points. She followed it with her first double-double since her sophomore season, scoring 16 points and snagging 12 rebounds. Youngstrom tied a career-high with three three-pointers and had three steals in the effort as well.
Youngstrom is the second player to earn GLIAC Player of the Week honors for NMU after sophomore Lexi Smith received recognition last week. The Wildcats are now 12-4 on the season and 7-1 in the GLIAC after defeating LSSU, 93-36, and FSU, 53-42. The team has held six opponents, including four GLIAC foes, to under 50 points this season and lead the league by allowing just 50.8 points per game. In GLIAC contests, they allow even less, just 46.6 points per game.
The Wildcats return to action Thursday to take on Davenport University at 530 p.m. in the Berry Events Center, hosted by 906 Technologies.
