Cambensy Named Assistant House Democratic Floor Leader
LANSING — State Rep. Sara Cambensy (D-Marquette) was named as assistant House Democratic floor leader today for the 2019-2020 legislative term. Cambensy is serving her second term representing the 109th House District and previously served on the Agriculture, Local Government, and Natural Resources Committees.
“I am honored to take on the role of assistant Democratic floor leader in this new legislative session. With my appointment, I will be involved in weekly meetings with leadership to discuss potential bills coming to the floor that could help or hurt constituents who live in rural areas of our state,” said Cambensy. “Having a seat at the table will allow me to be a strong advocate for residents in the Upper Peninsula and be in a position to advocate for amendments or change. This appointment is an opportunity to raise awareness about unique issues and circumstances that affect rural families, businesses, industry and individuals in Michigan, and help ensure that legislators consider our needs when passing bills.”
As assistant Democratic floor leader, Cambensy will be working directly with Democratic Floor Leader Yousef Rahbi (D-Ann Arbor) to direct House Democrats’ legislative priorities during session. Before serving in the Legislature, Cambensy worked for Marquette Public Schools as the director of adult education, in addition to serving as a Marquette city commissioner from 2012 to 2017. Cambensy graduated with a bachelor’s in education and a master’s in public administration from Northern Michigan University where she was awarded the Outstanding Graduate Award for the MPA Program. She has also been working toward a Ph.D. in environmental and energy policy, focusing on water quality and energy reliability issues for the Great Lakes region.
