Mayon named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week
BAY CITY, Mich. — Junior Jake Mayon (Plainfield, Mich./Plainfield East) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week for his performance Saturday against Davenport University.
Mayon rushed for a career-high 247 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. He ended the Homecoming game averaging 9.5 yards a carry.
His first touchdown came on the fifth play of the game, rushing 49 yards to cross the goalline. His second touchdown came in the fourth quarter and sealed Saturday’s win, rushing 58 yards for the score. Mayon’s day also featured a 75-yard scamper to set up a Wildcat field goal in the second quarter. For the season, he is now averaging 171 yards per game, which leads the GLIAC.
Behind his effort, Northern Michigan University captured their first win of the season, a 24-14 victory over the Panthers.
The team will look to build on their momentum as they prepare to take on rival Michigan Technical University Saturday night.
