DELTA COUNTY–According to the Delta County Sheriff’s Department, firefighters battled a fire at Pete’s Auto on Tuesday afternoon. Around 11:45 a.m, Escanaba Public Safety responded to a power line laying across the metal roofed auto shop, causing the structure to catch fire.

Mutual aide from several volunteer fire departments eventually extinguished the flames. At this time, it is considered a total loss. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was determined to be due to a fork lift operator striking an incoming power line with the fork lift boom.

Due to the size of the fire, U.S. 2 & U.S. 41 were closed down temporarily. A detour was set up directing traffic onto Old state road.

The highway has since been reopened to all traffic flow.
