NMU’s Shine signs with Grand Rapids Griffins
GRAND RAPIDS — Northern Michigan’s Dominik Shine signed with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the organization announced Tuesday afternoon.
Shine wrapped up his collegiate career with 97 points (48g-49a) in 131 career games. As a senior, he became the first Wildcat since 2007-08 to net 20 goals in a single season.
Shine becomes the second Wildcat currently in the Red Wings organization, joining Jared Coreau. He will play on an amateur tryout agreement for the remainder of this season and will then ink a standard player’s contract for 2017-18.
Shine registered 30 points in 2016-17 (20g-10a) and 2015-16 (15g-15a). Both seasons, he was the team leader in goals and also slotted in the WCHA’s top 10.
This season, Shine was named to the all-WCHA third team after tying for third in the league with 13 goals in 24 conference contests. He was also the first WCHA skater to reach the 20-goal plateau during the 2016-17 campaign.
In 2015-16, Shine was one of four WCHA skaters to average at least a point per game in league action, posting 25 (12g-13a) in 25 games. For his efforts, he earned a spot on the all-WCHA second team.
Shine also finished his career with three hat tricks, nine game-winning goals, a +13 plus/minus rating and 384 shots on goal. He had 22 multi-point efforts, topping out at a career-best four-point outing (2g-2a) on March 4, 2017 at Bemidji State in the WCHA quarterfinals.
During his time in Marquette, Shine was a three-time WCHA Player of the Month and a three-time Offensive Player of the Week. He was also named to the 2015 Great Lakes Invitational and the 2016 Florida College Hockey Classic all-tournament teams.
