University mentioned in student journalism censorship report

MARQUETTE — A report by the American Association of Professors says that colleges across the country are increasingly censuring student journalism.

The report titled, “Threats to the Independence of Student Media,” was released Thursday. It features a section on what is defined as ‘aggressive student journalism’ that ultimately resulted in faculty advisors losing their jobs.

One of the examples in the report happened last year at Northern Michigan University, when Cheryl Reed was denied re–appointment as adviser of the school’s paper, the North Wind. During her time as adviser, Reed was in charge of a paper that was at odds with university officials about open records requests.
