Local schools collecting socks for the holidays
MARQUETTE — Local schools are teaming up in an attempt to collect socks for homeless people.
The rock the socks event first stemmed from the ideas of students and a teacher at the Marquette Alternative High School who were looking for new ways to help the less fortunate in our community.
This charity event is going into its fifth year and gives local schools the chance to collaborate in an effort to collect socks. Not only does this event help out the community, but also teaches students valuable lessons.
“Collaboratively, we want to show the community that we care. So we collect socks for a week and then on Friday, we rock our crazy socks as a way of saying, we are a walking billboard to say, we know there is a need in our community and we will work to help make a difference,” said Marquette Alternative High School Teacher, Cindy DePetro.
Socks of all sizes, from infant to adult can be dropped off at schools all across Marquette County between December 5th and the 9th.
NMU is also getting involved this year by giving out free admission to their game on December 9th, by bringing a pair of new socks to be donated.
