UPAWS rescues nine puppies on death row, now available for adoption
MARQUETTE — The Upper Peninsula Animal Welfare Shelter is currently housing 12 new canine arrivals, including a litter of nine puppies, thanks to a collaboration with Rescue Road Warrior Transport and Halfway Home Rescue.
Even before UPAWS opened this morning, a family was waiting in hopes of getting one of the Labrador–Heeler puppies.
The litter, along with three adult dogs, was saved over the weekend from a high–kill animal control facility in Missouri and sent to find homes right here in the U.P.
“I had worked with them, folks in the Rescue Road Warrior Transport, many years ago, and I reached out to them again and they were thrilled to be involved with UPAWS,” said UPAWS Community Outreach Coordinator Ann Brownell. “Just this weekend, the program that they run saved 75 animals off of death row, sending them all across the country to rescues and shelters that would help them.”
Brownell says those interested in the puppies should come quickly because they likely won’t last through tomorrow.
“They’re going to need homes that are very active,” Brownell added. “These are dogs that are going to want to go to camp, be Yoopers, go swimming, get many big walks a day. So we’re looking for active families for these puppies.”
The new arrivals coincide with the annual Find A Friend with Fox event, which will be held at Fox Marquette between 3:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. tomorrow.
The car dealership will be paying the adoption fees on all UPAWS animals.
