Man arrested for allegedly hiring a hitman to kill his son, son's wife

MARINETTE, WI — A Crivitz, Wisconsin man is behind bars for allegedly trying to hire a hitman to kill his son and his son’s wife.

According to a release from the Marinette County District Attorney’s Office, Robert Dettmering, 76, will be charged Monday with two counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree intentional homicide.

On July 28, 2016, the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a man who said that Dettmering wanted to hire him to kill Jeffrey & Kandy Dettmering over a property dispute.

Robert Dettmering was willing to pay a hitman $10,000 to carry out the murders and burn their cabin down.

The sheriff’s office coordinated their investigation with the Wisconsin Department of Justice, who arranged for a ‘hitman’, who happened to be an undercover agent, to meet with Dettmering.

On August 3rd, the undercover agent met with Dettmering. The suspect allegedly gave the agent $1,000 cash as a down payment for the murders.

Dettmering told the undercover agent that he could supply a .22 caliber pistol to carry out the murders. The weapon was in a safe at Kranky Bob’s Bar.

Shortly after their meeting, Dettmering was arrested without incident.

He’s scheduled to be in court for the first time on Monday, August 8th. Both charges carry a maximum penalty of 60 years in prison.
