ESCANABA — A groundbreaking ceremony was held earlier today for the new marketplace location in Escanaba.

Construction crews have already started working on the eight-hundred square foot, pavilion styled building located on Ludington Street. This location will bring a brand new venue for the Farmer’s Market, wedding receptions, and any other occasions.

Some of the features that will be included with the construction is a stage with a seating area, restrooms, and a playground in the back. The marketplace has been a work in progress for quite sometime now, making members of the DDA happy to see it all coming together.

“It’s a project we’ve been working on for probably about five years so it’s one of the things we feel will be a real economic catalyst for our downtown, so it’s a really exciting day to really start to see the progress that’s being made on the site,” said Escanaba Downtown Development Authority Executive Director, Ed Legault.

Due to the new location, members are hopeful to see more foot traffic throughout the area.

“The visibility right here on Ludington Street is very important, we’re expecting to see a larger number of people who will be attending our Farmer’s Market, but the facility itself will be available for all kinds of get togethers,” said Escanaba Mayor, Marc Tall.

Although there is not an exact date for construction to be completed, it is estimated around late September.
