Modeltowners name Roberts interim varsity volleyball coach
GWINN — On Tuesday, it was announced that Modeltowners volleyball coach Stephanie Bahrman has stepped down as the varsity coach due to an unexpected career opportunity. But don’t worry Modeltowner fans, you probably know her replacement really well.
Junior varsity coach Toni Roberts has been named the interim coach of the varsity team. Gwinn is coming off another successful year as they made it all the way to the district finals. Roberts has coached the JV team for the last five years, which she says will make her transition very smooth.
“Steph and I worked hand in hand for all five of our seasons. I know how she ran her program and that’s a lot of how I want to run my program. I feel like because I was there and I’ve been through it all, even at just the JV level, that I’ll be able to step in and continue being successful just like Stephanie has been,” Roberts said.
The Modeltowners took part in a team camp last week in Negaunee, going 9–1 and winning bracket play. Roberts says going to these camps is very important for the team.
“I think that’s why we’re making huge strides as a program, to continuously be winning districts and conferences at both levels and we’ve got an awesome middle school program set up for the girls now. All of those continued reps through middle school and JV and open gyms makes a big difference,” said Roberts.
Gwinn will look to replace two of their best players from last year, Tori Lauren and Nicole Usher.
