Fire continues to smolder on U.P. island
FAYETTE — Firefighters plans for putting out the fire on Poverty Island have been delayed due to weather.
The fire started last Thursday on the island just south of the Garden Peninsula. Firefighters planned on using fire to control the wildfire but because of rain and high humidity, it has been put on hold. The 26-acre fire continues to smolder but has not grown since the rain from Sunday.
The island is uninhabited but does have a historic lighthouse that is being protected with fire line and sprinklers. Firefighters plan on burning out the unburned parts of the island later in the week when drier conditions come to the area.
