Local alumni hold fun run to honor previous student
NEGAUNEE — The Iron Ore Heritage Trail is where alumni gathered to participate in a 5k fun run.
In order to participate, individuals were asked to donate money to the Matthew Worthington scholarship fund. This scholarship was created in response to Worthington who was a student and part of the Negaunee class of ’94.
The run was also open to other Negaunee alumni, including one student who was previously awarded the Matthew Worthington scholarship and was happy to give back.
“I think it’s exciting to see everyone who is so willing to participate in things like this, and it being Pioneer Day, everyone’s out from out of town” said previous Matthew Worthington scholarship winner, Olivia Evans. “I think it’s cool to see everyone come together.”
Other people who decided to attend the race included teachers who had the opportunity to teach Worthington while he was attending Negaunee High School. Before the run kicked off, everyone was reminded to think of Matthew while making their way through the run. While some participants did decide to run, others walked and enjoyed the scenic trails.
