Business closing in historic building
HOUGHTON — A historic building in downtown Houghton will soon been vacant when the bank inside closes next month.
Wells Fargo Bank on Shelden Avenue will close its doors for good at noon on August 2nd. A spokesperson for the company said the decision came down to proximity since they have another location less than a mile away.
The iconic former Houghton National Bank building erected in 1887 will be put up for sale. Wells Fargo says they will try and find employees another position internally others may be eligible for separation benefits. Customers at their main branch downtown will be directed to their Houghton University location on College Avenue.
