Safety improvements, new look coming to downtown
MARQUETTE — Downtown Marquette is a few days away from the beginning of another construction project.
Construction crews will be tearing up several sidewalks on South Front Street in an effort to improve the safety of the area.
The Marquette Downtown Development Authority is funding the two hundred and fifty thousand dollar project, which includes the removal of brick pavers on several streets.
A combination of plain and stamped colored concrete will be installed where brick is currently located.
“The brick pavers that have been in the sidewalks through the years really don’t hold up to our weather,” said Mona Lang of the Marquette DDA. “It’s a safety concern as well as an aesthetic concern. We’re going to start on the east side of the 300 block and that will be the first project.”
The project, which will take place between the 100 and 300 blocks of South Front Street, is expected to be completed in mid–September.
Last summer, the DDA did a similar project on West Washington Street to repair its sidewalks.
