Possible rabid raccoons reported
MARQUETTE — Chief Zyburt of the Chocolay Township Police reports that their department has received numerous calls of raccoons behaving in a particular manner.
The raccoons, which are normally a nocturnal animal, are coming out in the middle of the day and appear to be lethargic and ill. Some suspect animals were euthanized and sent to the Michigan Department of Health where they are being tested for possible Canine Distemper or Rabies.
Zyburt and the DNR are recommending that pet owners keep their animals vaccinations up to date.
Anyone observing unusual behavior of wild animals should contact their local police department or the DNR.
