NEGAUNEE — An international event scheduled to take place early next year in Negaunee has been terminated.

The United States Luge Association informed the Upper Peninsula Luge Club over the weekend that the 2017 World Cup at Lucy Hill will not happen. Members of the U.P. Luge Club have spent the last three years getting ready to host the event in February for the first time in 20 years.

“We were devastated, we were very sad,” said Fred Anderson, vice president of the Upper Peninsula Luge Club. “They just pulled the race. I told them that this was going to be a big problem because we had the community behind us and they said it was their decision to cancel it.”

ABC 10 reached out to the U.S. Luge Association for comment, but our phone calls have not yet been returned. As for the U.P. Luge Club, they will continue to make improvements to the track and run the programs for the club’s younger athletes.
