Lady Miners look to repeat as MPC champs
NEGAUNEE — The Lady Miners were one of several Upper Peninsula teams that took part in the Spring Swing softball tournament at the Superior Dome a few weeks ago. Head coach Randy Carlson says there are some things that he likes and there are some things the team can be better at.
“Pitching-wise, we’re pretty young. I thought we pitched OK. We definitely, I think, will pitch better as the year goes on. I guess I was a little disappointed with our hitting, just because I think in two of the games, we could’ve scored more runs. We’ll need to do that better as the year goes on. We’re going to need to hit the ball better and score runs if we’re going to win games,” Carlson said.
The Lady Miners won the inaugural Mid–Peninsula Conference tournament last season and are ready to take on all comers. Coach Carlson talked about the fierce competition within the conference.
“I would say Norway definitely would be a favorite. They have a lot of people back. Ishpeming has a couple of good players back. Manistique has a bunch back. I would say we’re probably more of a dark horse, but as the year goes on, hopefully we will improve and be there at the end,” said Carlson.
Negaunee will open the season Monday April 25th at home against Rapid River.
