SAULT STE. MARIE — Some Copper Country residents are about to get a close look at how the Coast Guard cuts through ice.

Officials say the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Alder will be making its way through the Keweenaw Waterway on Wednesday. The ship will be conducting ice breaking operations at the request of local officials. The Alder will enter the waterway from the Keweenaw Bay in the east, heading west through Portage Lake before heading out into Lake Superior.

U.S. Coast Guard members are reminding recreational users of the Keweenaw Waterway to plan their activities carefully and use caution near the ice. Anyone with questions can call the Sault Vessel Traffic Service at (906) 635-3232 or e-mail SOOTFC@USCG.MIL.
